Before I became an art student, I was interested in pursuing sewing as a career. I am self taught and fairly talented so it made sense to become a seamstress. I soon realized that I actually hate sewing! It would cause my hands to cramp, sticking myself with a needle would draw blood, and the sewing machine and lights put off so much heat that I would sweat throughout the projects. With this realization I shifted my focus onto various other forms of art and moved on from the idea of pursuing this as a career.
No more blood, sweat and tears.Once I was an art student, I looked back on my roots for one particular school assignment. This assignment was to tell a story. So, I told the story of my love/ hate relationship with sewing. I embroidered french knots all over my canvas, formed fabric spikes, stuck needles and pins in all directions, and painted blood on the frame. This juxtaposition of soft, stuffed spikes and sharp, pointy needles demonstrates my feelings towards sewing.
